China's 2025 fishing season kicks off in grand style:

a thousand sails set off, embarking on a bountiful harvest.

In 2025, with the end of the summer fishing moratorium, coastal areas across China are welcoming a grand opening of the fishing season. On August 5th, the East China Sea took the lead in starting the "pre-fishing season." Thousands of fishing boats, escorted by maritime and fisheries patrol vessels, set sail from fishing ports in Nantong, Lianyungang, Zhoushan, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Ningde, and other places, heading to the fishing grounds.

This "pre-fishing season" permits four types of fishing vessels (including gillnet vessels, light purse seine/net vessels, pot and trap vessels, and rod-and-line shrimp fishing vessels). These vessels, with special fishing licenses, can catch shrimp, crabs, and mid-to-upper-level fish.

At noon, the summer fishing moratorium in the South China Sea officially ended. Thousands of fishing boats from Hainan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, and other regions set sail from their respective ports: over a thousand fishing boats at Tanmen Central Fishing Port in Qionghai, Hainan, were ready to depart; over 3,400 fishing boats from Yangjiang, Guangdong, sailed to the open sea after the fishing season opened; and opening ceremonies were held in Fangchenggang, Beihai, Qinzhou, and other places in Guangxi, with over 7,000 fishing boats heading to the South China Sea. Various regions also combined fishing port culture with intangible cultural heritage performances and other activities to promote the deep integration of fishing and tourism cultures.

Next, at 12:00 on September 1st, some fishing vessels in the Yellow and Bohai Seas will end their fishing moratorium and set sail; at 12:00 on September 16th, the East China Sea will fully open for fishing. The entire "fishing season" will last from August to September, with an estimated 100,000 fishing vessels setting sail in batches.

According to relevant departments, the summer fishing moratorium policy has been very effective this year, and the catch is expected to be higher than in previous years after the fishing season opens, providing the market with a more abundant supply of seafood.
