Fresh Squid Tubes Introduction
Peruvian squid "gut tubes" refer to the untreated squid body, retaining the internal organs and ink sac, and are cylindrical in shape. They are typically frozen and transported after being caught and require further processing before becoming edible squid products.
Methods for determining the freshness of Peruvian squid gut tubes are as follows:
Observe the Appearance
ColorFresh gut tubes should have a natural light pink or grayish-white surface with a glossy appearance. If they are yellowed, blackened, have numerous spots, or have lost their luster, they may be no longer fresh.
Eyes
Fresh squid eyes are clear, bright, and plump; cloudy or sunken eyes indicate longer storage time.
Shape Fresh gut tubes are plump, with an intact overall shape, and all tentacles are present and elastic; if they appear shriveled, dehydrated, or have detached tentacles or are soft and mushy, they may have spoiled.
Touch and Feel: Gently press the fleshy part of the squid gut tube. Fresh squid flesh is firm and elastic, and it should quickly spring back after being pressed. If a noticeable indentation remains and does not recover, it indicates spoilage
Smell the odor
Fresh squid viscera should have a faint seawater smell, not a pungent ammonia smell or other unpleasant odor. A strong, fishy stench indicates decomposition and spoilage.
Inspect the viscera If possible, carefully open the viscera to inspect the inside: Fresh squid viscera should be bright white or pale yellow, free of impurities and odors, and have an intact, unbroken structure. If the viscera are black, smelly, or rotten, the squid is less fresh.
